Insurance vs. Assurance

I received a notice from my medical insurance provider informing me that due to some changes in the policy, my current dentist was no longer contracted with the group. As a result, I was being assigned to a new dental office with the option to select another provider under my revised plan.

What a drag. It doesn’t matter to the company that I’ve been with my dental office for a number of years and have become comfortable with their service, staff, location, etc. The insurance plan changed. The provider changed. Like it or not, I had to change. That’s the way it goes with insurance.

A few days later, I was reviewing the daily reading for my Sunday School class (The Bible 30-Day Experience) and the commentator illuminated the story of Noah’s Ark in a way I had never considered. There was one door on the Ark. Through it, Noah, his family, and the animals entered a place of safety. Then, Noah shut the door to keep them secure inside the Ark. In like manner, Jesus is our Door – our access to God. He is the only way to the Father and He secures our position in the ‘ark’ of salvation.

Then it hit me! Unlike my insurance plan, God’s assurance plan does not change!

  • I will never need to find another Provider.
For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. (1 Tim. 2:5)
He has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5b)
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8)
  • He already knows my complete history.
For You formed my inward parts; You knitted me together in my mother’s womb. (Psalm 139:13)
Before I formed you in the womb I knew you. (Jeremiah 1:5a)
  • I will never need a referral to see a specialist because the great Physician’s care is all-inclusive.
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases. (Psalm 103:2-3)
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)
  • There’s no waiting period or appointment necessary.
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. (Psalm 46:1)
  • His coverage is guaranteed.
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28)
And I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. (Philippians 1:6)
  • His plan is not exclusive or subject to cancellation.
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:26)
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of My hand. (John 10:27-28)

The door on the Ark ensured safety from the flood. The Door – Jesus – saves us by His blood. Far better than optimal health, His plan offers eternal life! Furthermore, His plan has already been paid in advance and paid in full!

While I may have to get accustomed to a new dentist, it’s a temporary inconvenience and rather insignificant in light of the unhindered access, uninterrupted coverage, and unmerited benefits I enjoy under the plan of God.

That’s the difference between insurance and assurance. Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
